The Ultimate Guide to Balancing Work & Motherhood Without Guilt
If you’re a mum who’s deeply committed to your career and also wants to be there for your children, you’ve likely felt it—that heavy, quiet feeling of guilt. It creeps in during the school drop-off when you rush off to a meeting. It lingers when you miss the swimming lesson to meet a deadline. And it shows up when you're told (again) to “enjoy them while they’re little.”
Let me just say this: You’re not doing anything wrong.
You’re not failing your kids. You’re not selfish.
You’re a woman with big dreams and a full heart.
Welcome to Thriving Slowly—a space for working mums who want to rewrite the rules and build a life where both career and family matter.
Why the Guilt is So Heavy
Women over 40—like myself and so many in my community—are often in the prime of their careers. You’ve worked hard to get where you are, and your work might be a big part of how you express your identity and creativity. But suddenly, society shifts the expectation: now that you’re a mum, your presence should be “everything.”
But here’s the truth: presence is not about being there every second. It’s about being present when you are there.
The Real-Life Struggles No One Talks About
Let’s name them.
The mental load of remembering school projects, medical appointments, and what’s in the fridge.
The emotional whiplash of switching from boardroom to bedtime.
The silent exhaustion of advocating for a child with additional needs while holding it all together at work.
The invisible grief of feeling like you’re never fully present anywhere.
And yet, we keep going. Not because it’s easy—but because we care.
5 Practical Strategies to Balance Work & Motherhood Without Guilt
1. Define What Balance Means to You
Forget Pinterest-perfect schedules. Balance is deeply personal. For some, it’s working 3 days a week. For others, it’s owning a business. For me it was connecting with my work and dropping some days also advocating for what I needed with my workplace, fortunately, I do have a very understanding workplace. For a time I also had to step into a role which was of less pay, but less demand. This was one of the best things for me, as it gave me space to Ask: What do I need to feel grounded this season?
2. Time Block with Flexibility
Use your Apps like Before Sunset to create weekly blocks that account for work, parenting, and rest. Build in space for the unexpected—because kids don’t care about your calendar.
3. Automate the Mental Load
Meal planning, bill payments, appointment reminders—these don’t have to live in your brain. Use tools like Notion, Google Calendar, or the Automate Your Motherhood checklist to lighten the load.
4. Advocate Like a Pro—with Systems
If you have a child with additional needs, create a central hub in your planner to track appointments, NDIS notes, school communications, and questions you get asked over and over. It’s not just helpful—it’s empowering.
5. Redefine “Quality Time”
You don’t need hours. You need moments. A walk around the block. A dance party in the kitchen. Looking your child in the eyes and saying, “Tell me about your day.”
Let’s Drop the Guilt Together
You’re not alone in this, and you don’t have to do it perfectly to do it well.
Thriving Slowly isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing what matters most, with grace, strategy, and kindness to yourself.
If you’re ready to stop chasing balance and start building it—on your terms—you’re in the right place.
